You get to a particular point where you are fed up.
I remember when I was at school and my life ahead of me was full of possibilities. I actually skipped a grade so I graduated a year early, got a scholarship to university and had ambitious dreams. But reality set in. I couldn’t cope with the isolation of not having a drivers licence, job and being so far from my family. I pulled out of uni and things went downhill from there.
Fast forward 14 years later and I’m a mum with a gorgeous 7 year old who I have shared custody of. I have an amazing job and co-workers but my hands hurt and it’s commissioned based so no clients = no pay. I get by alright, but the concept of buying a house is laughable. Overseas trips? Maybe in 15 years or so.
We do enjoy life though of course – money doesn’t buy happiness, but it sure does solve a few problems.
Time? Who has that anymore these days? And that seems to be one of the biggest things for mums these days. No time, no identity past “mum”, not a lot of money but a burning desire to be more and do more for our families.
There’s Been A Shift
We want more in our lives. More than just survival. We’ve been told to dream and that we can conquer anything, but how? When you are a young mother particularly life is just about coping through today until you get to your wine tonight and then repeat. Cooking, cleaning, working… cleaning again! It’s depressing though we understand that’s just life. We suck it up.
I got sick of sucking it up. A couple of years ago I was having a weekend away in this nice quiet little beach town and I saw the new development there. I googled the house prices and saw that these WEEKEND HOUSES ranged from $1-3 Million. I couldn’t even afford to rent a nice unit (not that I don’t love where I am – great neighbours etc).
I thought, what’s happened to my life? I’m only 30 but I feel so damn old and ragged. My bloody joints shouldn’t be hurting yet! Hell!
